BILDRAUM 07:
VALENTINA BERTHELON & CATALINA IBAÑEZ

THU 7 - THU 27 MARCH

Tricky Women Tricky Realities brings together works by Valentina Berthelon and Catalina Ibáñez at Bildraum 07 – the focus of this year’s exhibition is on Chile.

In her virtual short film HAUNTED LANDSCAPES, Chilean artist and filmmaker Valentina Berthelon Chilean artist and filmmaker Valentina Berthelon investigates the fragility of political systems. The film was made in reaction to the protests against neoliberal policies in Chile which reached a dramatic climax on 18 October 2019. Santiago de Chile was burning, monuments were torn down, the air was filled with screams, and president Sebastián Piñera declared a state of emergency. Countless military operations evoked memories of the Pinochet regime, until the protests and riots effectively came to a standstill when the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

In HAUNTED LANDSCAPES, Valentina Berthelon looks at the epicentre of the 2019-20 protests, Plaza de la Dignidad in the heart of Santiago de Chile. The fragmented imagery reflects both the protesters’ goal to break up oppressive structures and the diverse individual experiences and traces of memory within these collective processes. It was primarily women who, for months, stood up against machista violence, femicides and unequal living and working conditions. The hoods they wore, which were soon declared a criminal offence by the authorities, became a symbol of feminism and equality; now, Valentina Berthelon has transferred them into an intervention at Bildraum 07. Together with other Chilean artists she has also created a host of hybrid identities who retake Plaza de la Dignidad to capture the moments of victory and collective catharsis from a predominantly female perspective.

Bildraum 07 also presents CUERPAS QUE LUCHAN/BODIES THAT FIGHT, an animated film by Catalina Ibáñez. It tells the story of Matilde Urzúa, a brave woman who participated in a performance denouncing patriarchy during the feminist movement of 2018. But everything that happened to Matilde after that demonstration is a stark reminder of the long road still ahead of us as we strive towards equality. Catalina Ibáñez wisely chose to focus on her protagonist’s way home: an effective narrative that is rounded off by experimental animation.
